FRIDAY 6 JUNE 2008

GROUP 1 A NORTH/SOUTH INITIATIVE FOR THE FINANCING OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGIES
One of the ways to achieve sustainability in the production as well as the distribution and the consumption of energy is to implement local systems based on communities. Several scattered initiatives, often cooperatives, already exist but they lack financial capital and remain small. On the other hand, finance is available for development policies from both public and private sectors but these resources are underused and scarcely oriented towards the long term funding of social organisations necessary to build alternative energy systems. The idea is to build a mutual system, based on existing initiatives (financial tools and projects) in the social finance sector, which would be complemented by other sources of funding to invest in global energy issues. We intend to identify the existing initiatives, and to start from identified needs with the aim of up scaling the global sustainable energy initiatives without losing the local and social linkage. Working group led by: Marcel Hipszman (Esfin Ides, France) in collaboration with Sidi (France) Languages: en/fr/sp

GROUP 5 SOCIAL FINANCE TOOLS FOR THE ASIAN SOCIAL ECONOMY
What steps/measures could INAISE members take to gain more knowledge about strategies and prospects of SMEs in Asia which are often too resource- constrained to produce the same level of disclosure as large companies? How useful would it be for the Workgroup to initiate a dialogue on socially responsible investments in social economy SMEs in Asian countries? This set of inter-related questions addresses the need for connecting like-minded investors and SMEs in order to grow together through shared visions and trust. What assessment tool could INAISE promote in order to help its members measure the sustainability performance of social economy SMEs in Asia? What financial instruments could be used to encourage cooperation among INAISE members to undertake a collective effort under the INAISE umbrella to channel investments, loans, or credit guarantees to social economy enterprises in Asia? If such financial instruments are created, how can they be replicated in other continents? A document has been prepared by Ben Quinones. Click here to access the pdf document.
