Responsible Credit UK Convention, London, 19th & 20th October 2010

The regulation of the UK’s credit markets is being radically redesigned. Government is currently consulting on its plans to create a new Consumer Protection and Markets Agency and the Financial Services Authority has set out its proposals to create a more responsible lending mortgage market. A longer term review of consumer credit and insolvency rules has also been signalled. Both lenders and consumers will have greater responsibilities – with the new Consumer Financial Education Body given a key role in helping households to improve their use of financial services.

Alongside these changes, the Convention will also examine the implications of public spending cuts on the provision of debt advice and financial inclusion services. The second day of the Convention sees the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review reported to Parliament and the Convention will provide an immediate opportunity for delegates to discuss the changes that this will require.

One thing is already clear – developing new and improved partnerships will be critical if we are to address the high levels of debt and financial exclusion that exist. With the support of the Money Advice Trust, Community Development Finance Association, and Transact – the national forum for financial inclusion, the Responsible Credit UK Convention is the place for stakeholders to come together to discuss the future direction of policy and share best practice in these areas.

We have thirty five breakout sessions over the two days covering all of the main policy issues and providing case studies of effective service delivery with disadvantaged communities and groups.

Plenary speakers include:

Reverend Jesse Jackson

Brian Pomeroy, Chair, Financial Inclusion Taskforce

Jim Dredge, Head of Operations and Money Guidance, Consumer Financial Education Body

Ray Watson, Director, Consumer Credit, Office of Fair Trading

Mark Lyonette, Chief Executive, Association of British Credit Unions Limited

Fiona Hoyle, Head of Consumer Finance and Fraud, Finance and Leasing Association

Robert Skinner, Director, Lending Code Standards Board
