Unites States, Washington Mutual Inc. to Offer Free Checking Account with Rebates

Washington Mutual Inc. is expected to unveil a free checking account today that includes rebates on debit card purchases and a waiver of one overdraft charge each year, industry sources said Friday.

The product launch will coincide with the launch of a much-anticipated advertising campaign, according to industry sources.

The account will include free international money transfers from the United States and no fees on automated teller machine transactions outside the United States, the sources said. They said the $343 billion-asset Seattle thrift company will pay customers 3 cents on each purchase made with a Wamu debit card, up to $250 a year.

Mary Kelly, a Wamu spokeswoman, would not discuss the matter.

In December the company hired the advertising agency Leo Burnett USA, a unit of Publicis Group of Paris. Leo Burnett has been working on the campaign with Wolff Olins, which Wamu chose in October as its brand agency.
