The Center for Consumer Law at the University of Houston Law Center

 Teaching Consumer Law Conference – Houston, Texas, 18 & 19 May 2012

The Center for Consumer Law at the University of Houston Law Center is organizing its sixth international law teaching conference. The subject is “Teaching Consumer Law in an Evolving Economy.”  The Conference will focus on how, if at all, the teaching of consumer law should be affected by recent economic events, and the globalization of law. The Conference is directed at those currently teaching or interested in teaching consumer law at the law school or college level. A discussion of the 2006 Conference may be found at: http://www.jtexconsumerlaw.com/V10N2/V10N2Teaching.pdf. The 2008 Conference is discussed at http://www.jtexconsumerlaw.com/V12N1/V12N1_Teaching4.pdf, the 2010 Conference at http://www.jtexconsumerlaw.com/V14N2/V14N2_Teaching.pdf

The 2012 conference will deal with themes such as:

  • How should we integrate recent economic developments into a consumer law course?
  • What innovations can we bring to the consumer law classroom?
  • Does the U.S. need additional consumer regulation, or less? What might be the impact of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau?
  • Are there innovative ways to resolve consumer problems?
  • How can we teach the multitude of subjects encompassed within the term “consumer law”?
  • International consumer law developments.
  • A consumer law update, discussing topics such as arbitration, class actions, banking and debt collection.

Papers are invited on any of the above themes, or any other topic related to the teaching of consumer law. Proposed papers may discuss the law of any jurisdiction; however, the emphasis is on topics of interest to law school professors and those with an interest in entering the profession.

Those who wish to submit a paper are invited to forward a proposal including a brief abstract of not longer than 400 words and contact information for the author. The proposals should be sent to Dean Richard M. Alderman at alderman@uh.edu. Proposals should be submitted no later than 4 December 2011. Authors will be promptly notified of acceptance by 15 December 2011. Final drafts of the papers are to be forwarded not later than the 1st of May 2012. The language of the conference is English.

The conference will be held in Houston on the 18th and 19th of May 2012 and will consist of one full-day and one half day session. Conference registration fees will be waived for all presenters. Some scholarships are available for travel and room costs. Selected papers will be published in the Journal of Consumer and Commercial Law, http://www.jtexconsumerlaw.com.

I look forward to seeing you in Houston next May.

Richard
