Payment services - UK: The Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012

New rule stops companies from charging more than it costs them to process card payments

Guidance (published: 26 March 2013): Provides guidance on the outline of the Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012 and their requirements. The Regulations aim to:

  • increase price transparency, enhancing consumers’ ability to choose effectively between different products and services
  • make payment surcharges cost reflective, steering consumers to the most efficient payment method
  • remove barriers to effective competition both for the products and services being purchased and between payment methods
